If Lindsay wrote a book; this would make an awesome chapter. And I would read every single one. I ADORE the way you weave the history of an item with the modern implications of styling it. I bought my first sweater vest last year and I was officially converted. That one by Maragua is droolworthy!!
Lindsay you outdid yourself. This is juicier and more informative than my fondest magazine-golden-era dreams. I also (selfishly) love that vests are Florida-friendly. ++Thank you for the flattering shout out. 🥰
Loved this Lindsay! I’m obsessed by a COS knitted vest that I saw on Lisa Ing Marinelli (one of the most stylish people on the plant IMO), and while I know the colour wouldn’t work for me, I’m holding out on finding my holy grail! x
I wish I could say it was primary research, but it was secondary! When I was in college I used to research diaries and letters from the 18th and 19th centuries to understand what women were wearing (and why)! Fashion history is so fun 🤩
While I own just one — a mustard yellow number — I am a fan of the vest. Can't live in the south without sleeveless fashion as we hit spring in the middle of winter (yesterday, February 2nd, 60 degree temps being a prime example). Also! Each time you speak of show ponies, my brain immediately reverts it to shiny ponies, Jenna Lyons' moniker for her shoe collection (and formerly J. Crew's brilliant fun offerings).
Ok I loooove the idea of shiny ponies, too!! And a mustard yellow sweater vest? Goals. How I’d love little bursts of spring like that, would make winter so much more tolerable. I was even happy with 42 and sunny today! It really does feel so much better after a 20 degree day!
It's moments like this that I don't miss NYC! I am putting the finishing touches on my chapter about procuring the "urban myth" manolos at the 2005 Seventh on Sale event and you triggering my thoughts about Jenna's shiny ponies has me now including a quote from her in it. You never know where from where a creative idea will strike, so thank you!
Totally concur! I have a couple of sweater vests hanging out in my TRR obsessions just waiting for the price to go down. I especially love the sweater vest/scarf set from CLÒIMH, the open silho feels very new.
Oh I’d love to see what you have your eye on, Tina! And I agree, I think that silhouette straddles the more relaxed boho artist vibe we’ve been seeing lately with the classic preppy vibe of the sweater vest!
The set is sold out but you can see the campaign image at the bottom of the HP here: https://www.cloimh.com/. It's like a sweater dickey and I'm obsessed. Agree, it's totally giving relaxed boho artist/unstructured cozy prep vibes. I'm also intrigued by Ganni's sweater vest that mimics their tie blouse/dress silho - love to see this kind of bestseller category crossover.
The denim work it look has been taken as a screen shot and will definatly be used as inspo I would never have thought to put tan trousers, brown vest, denim shirt and blazer together. This is why I love substack!
Lindsay when I tell you I literally pulled out an &Daughter sweater vest from my closet last night thinking “I need to style this and wear it more”….great minds! So many ideas to use here. Thank you for the shout outs and for being a part of my post yesterday!! Xoxo

What a compliment, Kelly, thank you!! The red thread of an item through history is my favorite part of fashion!

You made my day! How I miss the magazine golden era ✨ and yes, totally Florida friendly 🌴!

*me immediately going to COS* (and then looking up Lisa!!). And I know it will be worth the wait!
I love a sweet shirt dress! Thanks for all the great ideas!!
Thanks for stopping by, Rochelle!
How did you possibly date the sweater vest back to the 1800s!?! I am in awe. See you in my sweater vest! 🥰

So well written and I LOVE the history! Thank you!!
Thank you! That’s so kind, glad you enjoyed it!
The history! The looks! This is so good, Lindsay. Excuse me while I grab my sweater vest…
Thank you, Reiko! It’s an unsung hero for sure!
Yes, love a sweater vest. I recently got a thick cotton style from Toast so I'm bookmarking this post for future style inspo!
The Toast ones are SO good! I can’t wait to see how you wear it, Angharad!

Love a sweater vest! Great post 🩷
Thanks, Melissa! I’ve become a complete convert.
I haven’t worn a vest in years. It may be time to knit one. NO SLEEVES (IYKYK)
