Hi!
So, I can’t stop thinking about this Instagram account @nymetroweather - it’s written by John Homenuk,1 a meteorologist and weather consultant for industries like agriculture, skiing, and more. Homenuk has created a highly accurate weather forecast resource with an incredibly specific, engaging, and entertaining voice. I love that someone has brought something fresh and creative to the driest topic ever (no pun intended). I mean, you talk about the weather when you’ve exhausted all of your other small talk.
But he’s done it, and every morning when I see the post for the day’s forecast, I am reminded that there is always room for a new voice. And we all have new voices just by being ourselves. The universe is infinite - we are all unique! In my job, we talk about finding the “white space” to launch something new and gain a competitive advantage. (We’re usually talking about men’s polo shirts.) I tend to forget that we’re on a planet hurtling through actual space, so it’s pretty much all white space. I find that exhilarating.
The other day during my run I was listening to Sarah Paulson on Smartless, and she spoke about a tattoo she has. It’s a verse from the song “Move On” from the Sondheim musical Sunday in the Park with George:
Anything you do
Let it come from you
Then it will be new
Why not be the person to take on Storm Team 4, Jim Cantore, and the 10-day AccuWeather forecast?
The last line is:
Give us more to see
Which Sarah didn’t like. At least not enough to permanently inscribe on her body. But I don’t know, I find the whole concept quite lovely. You do you, and we’ll all be cheering each other on.
(By the way, I’ve never seen Sunday in the Park with George but I love the painting which inspired the musical..and pointillism in general. Millions of individual dots, coming together to form a masterpiece.)
I’ve been writing this newsletter for eight weeks. I love doing it, and I’m so glad that you seem to enjoy reading it. I am planning to stick around - I’d like to give you more to see - and I hope you will too. Thank you.
Have a wonderful, relaxing, peaceful holiday weekend. Do nothing or do it all. Either way, enjoy.
