Hi!
I don’t really have many parenting mantras, despite being a parent of three boys. When I think I’ve finally figured something out, one of them makes it clear that I definitely haven’t. Which is fine - keeps things interesting!!
But there is one rule I swear by: when it doubt, air it out.
For example, those chubby baby rolls under those chubby baby chins that always collect milk dribbles? Air ‘em out. Preferably when they’re contact-snoozing on you.
Croup? Get that cold winter air into those airways ASAP.
Rough-housing that turns into straight-up wrestling? To the park we go!
Smelly hockey gear? Air it out…and pray.
I’ve started to apply the rule to me, too.
I try to run - three miles give or take - as often as I can.
And I’ve never regretted a run.
I’ve had slow runs, cold runs, walk-runs, windy runs, sweltering runs.
And I’ve felt better after every single one.
I feel fortunate to live in a safe place where I can step outside my home and go for a run.
So I do, as often as I can.
I don’t train for races or time because I don’t want to add any pressure to what’s such a simple joy.
I try not to be precious about it.
If I find myself with 25 minutes, I go. Even if I’ve just eaten. Even if I’ll get a cramp. Even if it’s raining. Even if it’s dark. I just adjust my gear and my route and take off.
I’ve yet to find a better way to clear my head and relax my body than by going outside.
Run, walk, jog, skip, hike, bike. I don’t think it matters. If you can, just do it!
My running recommendations:
Again, I try not to get overly specific about this. But here are my must-haves:
EltaMD UV Clear Face Sunscreen, SPF 46 (what an odd number, but it works)! Currently 20% off with coupon.
North Face Jim Beanie Hat in the winter (a wool- poly blend with lining; it’s a little big on me but I like that I can pull it over my ears), and any old baseball cap in the summer.
Lululemon Fast and Free Tight (the pockets are essential). I’ve been wearing these for years in the 25” length. I’m short.
Hoka Bondi 8 Running Shoes because I love the max cushion, although you probably won’t win any races in them. But remember, that’s not the point!
Podcasts: I’m a dedicated listener when I run. Chicken soup for the brain and body. My favorites are:
Smartless for the charm, banter, and celeb interviews
Table Manners for the mother-daughter hosts, British accents, and celeb interviews
Work Life for organizational psychologist Adam Grant’s insights, thoughtfulness, and celeb interviews
Second Life for entrepreneur Hillary Kerr’s conversations about second chances, second careers, and new adventures, and the celeb interviews! (sensing a theme, yet?)
That’s it! Let me know if you get outside this weekend!
